Summary

Miranda Fitch’s life is a waking nightmare。 The accident that ended her burgeoning acting career left her with excruciating, chronic back pain, a failed marriage, and a deepening dependence on painkillers。 And now she’s on the verge of losing her job as a college theater director。 Determined to put on Shakespeare’s All’s Well That Ends Well, the play that promised, and cost, her everything, she faces a mutinous cast hellbent on staging Macbeth instead。 Miranda sees her chance at redemption slip through her fingers。

That’s when she meets three strange benefactors who have an eerie knowledge of Miranda’s past and a tantalizing promise for her future: one where the show goes on, her rebellious students get what’s coming to them, and the invisible, doubted pain that’s kept her from the spotlight is made known。

With prose Margaret Atwood has described as “no punches pulled, no hilarities dodged。。。genius,” Mona Awad has concocted her most potent, subversive novel yet。 All’s Well is the story of a woman at her breaking point and a formidable, piercingly funny indictment of our collective refusal to witness and believe female pain。

I think Mona Awad has a really unique and compelling writing voice and POV。 I like her dark humor and she uses it to good effect in skewering aspects of our world, in this case the wellness industry, pain management, and the false morality of good health。 I also thought the way she weaved All's Well, Macbeth, and some Faust into the narrative, blurring the lines between theater and reality, was clever and interesting。 Unfortunately, in a lot of ways this felt too similar to her previous novel, B I think Mona Awad has a really unique and compelling writing voice and POV。 I like her dark humor and she uses it to good effect in skewering aspects of our world, in this case the wellness industry, pain management, and the false morality of good health。 I also thought the way she weaved All's Well, Macbeth, and some Faust into the narrative, blurring the lines between theater and reality, was clever and interesting。 Unfortunately, in a lot of ways this felt too similar to her previous novel, Bunny, and I liked that one better。 The voice of the protagonist is very similar, as is the academic setting and the devolution of everything that's happening to her。 It felt too much like an echo of that book for me。 。。。more

Jesus, this was hectic! Mostly in a very, very good way, even though it also stressed me out a bit。 I don't quite know what to think about the ending, but books like these are almost impossible to conclude satisfactorily, and the fact that I'm not unhappy with it is still a big win to me。 Jesus, this was hectic! Miranda just so happened to girl boss a little too close to the sun, but it’s all about the lessons we learned along the way。

This book was so bizarre, I don’t know what to think of it。 I don’t know what to rate it, I don’t know what genre it was, I don’t know anything! This is my first book by Mona Awad and I loved her writing style。 The main character was so unlikeable, but Awad did a great job portraying her that way。 I did feel like this book was too long。 There were a lot of theater details that seemed to drag the story out, and parts of it felt very repetitive。 But I will admit I am not well versed in Shakespeare This book was so bizarre, I don’t know what to think of it。 I don’t know what to rate it, I don’t know what genre it was, I don’t know anything! Really well written, but I felt like I was on drugs。 So hard to keep up with the main characters chaotic thoughts and experiences。 I wish the ending held more answers and clarity but I guess that’s the point, you’re meant to draw your own conclusions/interpretations。

4。5*The plot was keeping me on my toes, I was very curious about how Mirandas shenanigans were going to develop and what her actions were going to lead to。 However, the book did somehow feel a bit slow。 The writing is fast paced, making it a quick read, but the things that happen are far apart and drawn out。 I couldn't tell you a single important event in the story, because all of those took place over so many pages that they kind of became uninteresting as they happened。 I still got through the 4。5*The plot was keeping me on my toes, I was very curious about how Mirandas shenanigans were going to develop and what her actions were going to lead to。 However, the book did somehow feel a bit slow。 The writing is fast paced, making it a quick read, but the things that happen are far apart and drawn out。 I couldn't tell you a single important event in the story, because all of those took place over so many pages that they kind of became uninteresting as they happened。 I still got through the book quickly, but I'd say the slow pace is probably my main complaint。 Miranda's character development throughout the book is so interesting, on the other hand。 She rapidly becomes a completely different person and it's very unsettling, especially considering she herself doesn't seem to realize what a terrible person she has become。 Mona Awad's writing style is so immersive。 You really feel like you are the main character, experiencing what she is experiencing, and it doesn't even feel like reading (there goes a hundred pages, whoops I forgot lunch)。 She also creates the most amazing creepy atmosphere without anything in particular happening, the small details accumulate and slowly make you more and more uncomfortable。 I love books where you 1) don't know what's real and what's not, are you being lied to by the narrator? is the narrator being lied to? and 2) it's very unclear whether certain events are supernatural or if there's a natural cause。 I want to be confused, and I was while reading this book。 All's Well did the uncomfortable-rather-than-scary thing better than Bunny did, so if you liked Bunny for that reason (like me), this is for sure the book for you。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I have somewhat mixed feelings about this book。 Though I enjoyed it, the last quarter of the book was confusing and it became harder to tell the difference between Miranda’s reality and hallucinations。 I also think I would have been able to appreciate the All’s Well That Ends Well references, if I had been more familiar with Shakespeare。 Still, I found the plot and writing to be amazing! The commentary about everyone, including doctors, dismissing women’s pain is so important。

I don’t get the point of the story?? 😂 All’s Well lol

Ugh here I go DNFing another audiobook。 This book was off-putting in the worst way。 Listen, I understand this was probably the intention, and Mona Awad really is a good writer, but wow, this book put me in a terrible mood everytime I tried to listen to it。

As someone who struggles with an invisible illness, this book felt almost uncomfortable to read — even so, I found it impossible to put it down。The tone is frenetic and menacing; the characters are at once likable and detestable; the story is honest, but in a glaring way that you aren’t sure if you’re entranced by or repulsed by。This is a strange read, but a good one — wholly unexpected。

Really interesting story, great for any Shakespeare lover。 There is some repetitive language that becomes a bit monotonous, but overall a very enjoyable read。 It is full of the whimsy and magic that only Shakespeare can seem to create, a little bit of romance, a little bit of tragedy, and a little bit of dark comedy all rolled into one。

It’s a wild ride of a book-So creative! Is it Shakespeare or black magic or a cast of crazy characters? Maybe all three。。

Strange and disturbing, but hard to put down。

3。5 overall rating。 It took a long time for me to begin to like “All’s Well”, and over half way before I stopped thinking I’d give it up。 This is a really strange story, but then it is all about theatre, and theatre is nothing if not high drama。 The main character, Miranda, is a drama queen。 Good character casting; with some weird and intriguing supernatural stuff going on。 The author is most perceptive when it comes to shedding light on our all too human response to physical pain, both coping w 3。5 overall rating。 It took a long time for me to begin to like “All’s Well”, and over half way before I stopped thinking I’d give it up。 This is a really strange story, but then it is all about theatre, and theatre is nothing if not high drama。 The main character, Miranda, is a drama queen。 Good character casting; with some weird and intriguing supernatural stuff going on。 The author is most perceptive when it comes to shedding light on our all too human response to physical pain, both coping with it in others and enduring it ourselves。All in all this novel turned out to be an entertaining extravaganza。 。。。more

Compelling。 I did not want to give this 4 stars because I thoroughly and completely loathed the main character。 I felt icky reading it but I simply could not put it down。 If a book MAKES you finish it in spite of all the discomfort felt in doing so, I guess that means it deserves four stars。。。 right? I'm conflicted。 I need to read something warm and fuzzy now because I feel like I took a bath in dirty water。 Compelling。 I did not want to give this 4 stars because I thoroughly and completely loathed the main character。 I felt icky reading it but I simply could not put it down。 If a book MAKES you finish it in spite of all the discomfort felt in doing so, I guess that means it deserves four stars。。。 right? Look--I am the target audience for a novel about a troupe of college Shakespeare weirdos going full Black Swan, and this book did not disappoint。 Mona Awad never does! I love her immersive storytelling and deeply sinister overtones。

3。25 stars。 This was a really interesting read to say the least。 Mona Awad writes suffering in such excruciating detail that I felt ghost pain the entire time I read this book。 Now I kind of want to read Macbeth。

Wow。。。 that was a hell of a ride and I'm not quite sure what just happened to me。 I don't think the dust jacket's summary prepared me in any way for what was coming。 From the synopsis, I was under the impression it would read more as a fictionalized memoir, maybe with some surreal elements thrown in。 After all, it was described as a woman with chronic pain employed as a struggling theater director。 Seems pretty cut and dry, right? Whoops。 My mistake。I don't want to give anything away, so I'll ju Wow。。。 that was a hell of a ride and I'm not quite sure what just happened to me。 I don't think the dust jacket's summary prepared me in any way for what was coming。 From the synopsis, I was under the impression it would read more as a fictionalized memoir, maybe with some surreal elements thrown in。 After all, it was described as a woman with chronic pain employed as a struggling theater director。 Seems pretty cut and dry, right? This follows pretty much the same formula as “Bunny,” which was disappointing even though I’m obsessed with Bunny。 In this context the ~surrealist~ aspects were grating rather than enchanting。 Plus I hated all the characters and NOT in a fun way。 Have to give it 3 stars because Mona Awad rly knows how to do suspense

Very attracted to the concept of this book having listened to its author Mona Awad interviewed on CBC。 I even bought it as a gift for a friend (prior to reading it)。 I became bored after 2 chapters and sadly I abandoned it。 Something I almost never do。

I would read anything Mona Awad writes。 She reels you in and takes you for a ride。 You never know if things are truly happening or you're experiencing some alternate life/realm/reality。 Excellent read。 I would read anything Mona Awad writes。 She reels you in and takes you for a ride。 You never know if things are truly happening or you're experiencing some alternate life/realm/reality。 Excellent read。 。。。more

This was my first Mona Awad book and I am definitely interested in reading more。 Her descriptions of chronic pain and how the protagonist was treated within the medical system and by her peers are especially apt in a time when many people are experiencing chronic illness because of COVID。 Plus there is witchcraft。 Weird in a very gripping way。
